FIELD OF LIFE

We could meet him in Kabul - we were there at the same time. Didn't have to. And here is the bust. What was he like - senior sergeant Nikolai Chepik? How did you live? What remains of a life of only twenty years? Many, if not all, material traces disappear without a trace. The memory of exploits - never.

Today we know who Chepik became in his twenties. And who could become in forty or fifty? One can only guess about this. He was not expected to have a bright future. He was an honest, hardworking, decent guy. Normal! But it is here, in a stable, good normality, that energy, nobility and selflessness are born, ripen, which, under a certain set of circumstances, lead to a feat.

There comes a moment, and an ordinary representative of his generation - in this case, Nikolai Chepik, but it could be someone else - shows what he is capable of. In fulfilling his duty, he accomplishes a feat.

Chepik saved the lives of those whom he protected at the cost of his own life. This is the pinnacle of what is possible.

The unit in which Nikolai served as part of a limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan was located in one of the eastern provinces of the country. Attacks of dushmans on civilians, arson of schools, mosques, and brutal murders have become more frequent here. The gangs of mercenaries abandoned from abroad, in their cruelty, probably surpassed even the atrocities of the German fascists.

February nights in the Afghan mountains are not just dark. They are slate black. The snow is black, the sky is black, the wind is black - it's time for black deeds.

Dushmans attacked the unit before dawn. Vile, insidious and sudden. The snow-covered stone ridge was the last front line of Senior Sergeant Nikolai Chepik.

He saw how a large group of dushmans was approaching them, the living ring was shrinking tighter and tighter. And now one, and then the second bullet pierced his legs. Bullets whistled over the heads of his friends - soldiers, compatriots, and behind the soldiers, farther, were the inhabitants of a tiny village forgotten by the Muslim god, in which dukans were dying. And Nikolai made a decision: to cover his comrades, everyone who was behind him with his own life.

A deafening explosion rolled over the earth. Thirty dushmans fell down dead, the rest fled.

The last thing he could still see were the peaks of the Hindu Kush, and above them a huge - up to the very Motherland - brightening sky.

CHEPIK Nikolai - Hero of the Soviet Union... Senior Sergeant of the Guard. Nikolai Chepik prepared himself in the best way for military service. When he joined the sapper company, he was already a discharger in several sports. Therefore, in the early days, I did not feel the difficulties that beginners usually face at first. He helped his comrades a lot, shared his experience with them. And it is no coincidence that Komsomol member Nikolai Chepik was appointed deputy platoon commander. Time flew by quickly, and the service of the guardsman was coming to an end. But Nikolai did not have a chance to change his army uniform for a civilian suit. The harsh time of testing came suddenly, breaking all plans, destroying many hopes. And Nikolai, with weapons in his hands, along with his fellow soldiers, had to engage in a mortal battle with an insidious enemy. In that last battle, the beautiful character traits of Nikolai and other guardsmen were even more clearly revealed, their courage and heroism showed immense love for their homeland, for their people, fidelity to sacred military duty. The fight was exceptionally brutal and lasted for a long time. Held in the mountains, he demanded great endurance and courage from the guards. And everywhere the commander was in front, showed a personal example, led. Being equal to the sergeant, privates Alexander Rassokhin and Kerim Kerimov, who were part of the guard group, acted boldly and boldly. The Komsomol members were truly fearless. None of them paid any attention to the bullets whistling over their heads, fired at the brave men by enemy snipers. All the thoughts of the guardsmen were subordinated to one thing - the desire to ensure the success of the offensive of the unit in this direction. Having received an order to destroy the enemies who had settled in one of the caves, Nikolai with three soldiers, under fire from snipers, made his way behind enemy lines and completed the combat mission. When returning to their own group was discovered and surrounded. In an unequal battle, the guardsmen were seriously wounded, but bleeding, they continued to fight with the enemy. Bullets screeched against the stones. The enemy showered the daredevils with dense lead rain. Enemy bullets ended the life of one sapper, the second, the third. Guard Senior Sergeant Nikolai Chepik was left alone, but continued to fight. In short well-aimed bursts, he mercilessly smashed enemies. But the ammo ran out. Like a flock of jackals, enemy soldiers rushed at the hero in a bloodthirsty pack, anticipating reprisals against an unarmed Soviet soldier. When they ran up almost close, suddenly burst out a strong explosion. Nikolai Chepik blew up the only remaining mine, died himself and destroyed 32 enemies. His deed is not forgotten.

Before the 357th regiment of the 103rd division of the airborne troops, in which Nikolai served, special tasks were set. Work in the enemy's rear, the elimination of bandit formations, the protection of the local population - operations that require not a massive attack by large forces, but the delivery of accurate and effective strikes at key points in enemy territory.

On that day, February 29, 1980, a group of four people under the command of deputy platoon commander Nikolai Chepik was returning from a successfully completed mission - they were instructed to blow up a cave in which dushmans settled. Suddenly, the paratroopers stumbled upon a dushman detachment. An unequal battle ensued. The enemy tried to take the guys into the ring, but a small detachment of Nikolai desperately resisted. When comrades died one after another and Nikolai ran out of bullets, letting the dushmans come closer, he blew up the remaining mine. Together with the Soviet soldier-internationalist, 32 bandits were killed. Nikolai Chepik was only 20 years old.

We need peace, not war

Nikolai Chepik served in the paratrooper sappers unit. On February 29, 1980, Nikolai's unit, returning to its place of deployment after clearing the roads, was ambushed. Some of the soldiers died. Sergeant Chepik took command. He was wounded in the thigh, ordered everyone to retreat, and he himself remained to cover his comrades. Could not move independently. After some time, he used up all the ammunition. Dushmans came close, surrounded the soldier from all sides. They probably counted on easy prey, but they didn’t even have time to come to their senses, as the paratrooper set off a directional mine ...

They were just getting started

He wrote home that a paratrooper loses a battle when he is already dead. The dushmans who surrounded three of our soldiers on the last day of February 1980 did not know this. Both comrades died under their heavy fire, only Chepik remained, clutching a grenade in his hand. Surrender?.. Not how he was brought up... There was an explosion... He died, but took with him the lives of several dozen more dushmans.
