How to number pages in Word. How to Number Pages in Word

We don't use page numbering very often in Word. And maybe I would never have needed it if I hadn't started writing my book. And here the numbering is simply necessary. It is also necessary when writing a thesis or term paper.

Yes, and in a simple essay, it also does not hurt. Let's not delay the matter indefinitely, let's try to number the pages right now. The first thing to do is in the Word itself (Word) find the line "Insert" and click on it.

After this action, such a panel will open in front of us, where we just need to find this row, under which there is the signature “Headers and footers”. In this row of three lines, we are interested in the most recent “Page Number”.
After that, you need to click on this line with the mouse. When this action is completed, a new panel will appear in front of us again.
Here we see exactly how the numbers will be located. Let's choose some example and look at the result.
And this is what we got on the Word sheet itself (Word)
Everything, the sheet is numbered. In the same way, all other pages of your document will be numbered from the very first to the very last. But here, too, there is one "but". Where did you see the document starting from the page under the number 1? That's right, there is practically no such thing anywhere. Because number 1 is the title page. And we don't number it. And what about then? Everything is simple. In order to solve this problem, you need to click on this line "Format page numbers"
And we have this image in front of us:
What do we need here? Just one thing - "Page number" and "Start at". Here you just need to put the number with which the book, dissertation or essay begins.
Everything, the numbering is put down as it should be. Now let's try to sort out this question. When we carry out all these actions, we get such a strip.
How to remove it? Everything is very simple. To do this, click on the box "Close header and footer window" Where to look for it? But here.
After this action, we will have only one numbering.

How to number pages in Word, for example, with Roman numerals or even letters? Oh, and that's not a problem! Numbering pages in Word this way is very simple. Again we display this window "Page number format" and in the line "number format" select Roman numerals.
And here's what we got:
Well, how can you completely remove the entire numbering? And this problem is very easy to solve. To do this, click in the column of footers "Delete numbers".
So, easy and simple, and most importantly, understandable for everyone, we have solved one of the main problems of Word users - how to number pages. I think now you will definitely not have any difficulties with this!

Correct page numbering will allow you not to get confused in the sequence of sheets of your document when printing. Word tools allow you to make various types of pagination, for example, you can reflect not just the sequence of pages, but also add the author's name, document title, and even the chapter number.

Putting numbers on pages manually is a thankless job. At the slightest change, you will have to redo the entire numbering again. Therefore, the easiest way to set up sequential pagination is to use automatic page numbering.

To do this, in the ribbon menu you need:

Step 1. Select "Insert".

Step 2 Click on "Page number" in the "Headers and footers" section.

Step 3. In the drop-down menu, select the desired type of arrangement of numbers and simply click on it. As a result, you will get numbering according to the given template in any range on the header:

On a note! Each type of placement has a list of subtypes that open when you hover over the type with the mouse.

By default, you can display page numbers in the center of the header, in the corners, or set up a special display, for example, in a square or in a bookmark image. The choice of templates is quite large, so for most users these functions will be enough.

Setting individual parameters

Special designation of the first page

But in some cases a special design is required. For example, when submitting scientific papers, the number should not be displayed on the first page. To set a custom header and footer for the cover page:

Continued numbering

In some situations, you want to continue pages from a specific value. For example, when the first part of an article, book or scientific work is in another document.

This action is also performed through the "Constructor" menu. Necessary:

In this way, you can create complex pagination by setting, for example, numbering from page 10 in one place, and from page 50 in another. This is useful when co-producing a single document that needs to be printed on different devices.

Different headers and footers for odd and even pages

In some situations, you want to set a different numbering appearance for adjacent pages. By default, the numbering mirroring functionality is built in, when the numbers are on opposite corners of the page or, on the contrary, are nearby.

But if you need some kind of refinement, for example, so that on even pages the numbering is at the bottom, and on odd pages - at the top, you can apply the corresponding item in the "Designer" menu.

Setting up different types of headers and footers is done manually. In addition to displaying numbering, you can configure the display of various additional elements, for example, the author's name on an even page and the title of a work on an odd one.

Inclusion of additional elements

After the numbering is set up, various additional elements can be entered into the header and footer. For example, you can manually write in front of the number: "Page number". Now this phrase will be duplicated on each page, and the number will change depending on the pagination settings.

In addition, additional elements can be included in the header and footer, which will serve as a source of additional information. For example: date and time. You can customize their display in any form, including enabling auto-update.

You can also enable the display of information about the document by adding:

  • the name of the author or leader;
  • Title of the document;
  • the path to the document on your hard drive;
  • organization name, address, telephone, fax;
  • keywords, etc.

This information is taken from the properties of the file, of course, if they are pre-set.

You can even use pre-designed quick fields to display basic information next to the page number.

You can also add to the footer:

  • hyperlinks;
  • drawings and illustrations;
  • automatic text.

The use of additional elements allows you to diversify the appearance of the page and avoid manually entering the same data.

Visual numbering setup

Numbering appearance settings are presented by default: Calibri font and size 11. Naturally, such settings may not correspond to the corporate style or requirements for the design of a scientific work. You can't customize the pagination design from the "Constructor" menu. To do this, you need to switch to the "Home" tab and make the necessary changes in the appearance from there.

You will be able to change:

  • number position (right, left, centered, indented);
  • font size (size);
  • the font itself;
  • letter color;
  • bold / italic / underline, etc.

In a word, you can perform standard manipulations that can be performed with text. You can also apply Quick Styles for automatic formatting.

Attention! You cannot close the "Designer" menu (click on the big red button with a cross) - in this case, you will be transferred to the body of the document, and you will not be able to edit the header and footer. If this happens, double-click on the page number - you will return to the desired menu.

Conclusion

Thus, setting up page numbering in Word is easy. You can use both ready-made templates built into the standard package, and advanced ones downloaded from the Microsoft website. At the same time, through the "Constructor" and "Main" menus, you can change the contents of the header: set up precise pagination, change the navigation design, add the necessary elements.

Video - How to number pages in Word 2007, 2013

From the lesson How to number pages in Word 2007» you can learn about pagination methods in the world-famous office text editing program - Microsoft Word. In this tutorial we will use the 2007 version of this program.

Our task: Learn to number pages and automatically number all pages in a document.

What do we need: Only Microsoft Word 2007, which is usually installed with other Microsoft office programs. Program developer site - Microsoft Word

Let's say we have a finished Microsoft Word document and we need to number all the pages in it. Let's say the folder contains this file:

Fig 1. Microsoft Word file in a folder

Perhaps you have a file and will not have “.docx” in the name, but only the file name, for example “document”. This is the same thing, depending on the settings on the computer (whether file extensions are shown or not, this feature can be turned on or off).

Open the file we have by double-clicking the left mouse button on the file icon. After a while, our file will open and we will see the contents:

Fig 2. Contents of the document.docx file

Yes, maybe it will be another work :)

Fig 3. "Insert" tab

In this tab we find the block "Headers and footers" and left-click on the item " Page number ”, after which the menu will appear:

Fig 4. Managing page numbers

Next, we will be asked to choose where we want to place page numbers and how they should be numbered. Positioning options are available to choose from: at the top of the page, at the bottom of the page and in the margins of the page. Most often, in documents, the page number is indicated at the bottom of the page, in the center.

At this stage, it is not at all necessary to imagine mentally where it is and how it will look, all positions show visually how it will look in reality. To see an example page number locations just move the mouse cursor over the required positioning element, let's say we want to place page numbers at the bottom and in the center:

Figure 5. Pagination Menu

Point to " At the bottom of the page” and select in the center. After selecting the position of the page numbers (clicking the left mouse button on the positioning type), the program will automatically switch to the so-called " Constructor” and the cursor will automatically be placed on the page number:

Fig 6. Design tab

We do not change anything here, but simply click on the button " Close header and footer window»:

Fig 7. Close button for design mode

Now, as we see, having scrolled through our document, all pages are numbered in Arabic numerals from 1 to the number of sheets in the document. But what to do if we are not tired that the page numbering in the Word will be Arabic numerals? So we need to change the page number format. To do this, we find at the top of the open Word document the tab " Insert” and click on it with the left mouse button. In this tab we find the item "Page number" and in the pop-up menu click on the item " Page number format...»:

After clicking, a window will open Page number format»:

Now our document has page numbering and this numbering is in Roman numerals. If you change your mind and decide to number the pages in a different format, then you need to do these simple steps again.

In further lessons, we will learn how to remove page numbers both completely and partially from the first page.

Students and people who work a lot with text often have to create large documents. In order not to get lost in the content and not to confuse the printed pages, they must be numbered.

Fortunately, this process takes a little time and does not require special skills. In addition, the algorithm of actions for pagination does not depend on the version of the office program installed on your computer: in Office 2007, and in 2010, and in 2016, the numbering process consists of the same steps.

We'll show you how to number pages in Word, as well as the different numbering options. All examples in this article are made in Microsoft Word 2010.

How to Number Pages in Word

Create a document in Word or open an existing one. In the top menu, go to the "Insert" tab. In the "Headers and Footers" section, click on the "Page Number" line.

In the drop-down list, you will see four options for the location of the page number: at the top, at the bottom, in the margins, or in the current position - where the cursor is currently located. The design of many official documents, such as theses, is regulated by GOST, so the choice of the position of page numbers should not confuse you. As a rule, the page number is put down in the footer.

After you select the position of the number, the program will number all pages, starting from the first, and the "Working with headers and footers" tab will open in the top menu.

To customize the appearance of the number, go to the "Page Number" - "Page Number Format" section.

In this window, you can select the alphabetic or numeric format of the number, as well as set the page from which the numbering of the document will begin. For example, if you enter the number 2 in the "start with" field, then the first page of the document will receive the second number.

If your document has numbered sections, you can include the chapter number in the pagination. If you select an em dash as the delimiter, the number format will be "X - Y", where X is the chapter number and Y is the page number.

How not to number the first page in Word
