For a long time, Hagen Correspondence University (Fernuniversität in Hagen) was the most famous German university specializing only in distance learning. Distance learning: universities in Germany

So, this year the Distance Learning Center at the State Technical University of Kaiserslautern took first place. He has been in the education market for 25 years. It offers 18 master's programs and advanced training courses in three main areas: human resources, management and law, science and engineering. The first distance learning programs of the Center for Language Psychology were on audio cassettes (now a new generation of our users will wonder: “What is this?”), then on disks, then on flash cards, and now everything can be downloaded via the Internet. We started working in those years (1992-97) when some still did not know what distance learning was, while others asked the question: “How can you learn languages ​​remotely?” Instead of the word “distance” there was the word “correspondence”, and the attitude towards distance learning was somewhat dismissive. In fact, words were replaced simultaneously with the emergence of new opportunities and technologies. Therefore, the topic of distance learning gradually became understandable and even popular to many. No wonder: at the current pace of life, the opportunity to do something useful remotely, without spending special time on the road and without rigidly adjusting to someone else’s schedule, is in great demand. The development of the Internet and other remote technologies has added a lot of opportunities for distance learning and...

Distance learning of a foreign language in our time can be implemented in a wide variety of ways - from distance learning with teachers via Skype to interactive programs and simulators. We deliberately do not include here such opportunities as broadcasts in the language, listening to the radio, and so on, since in such cases we are not talking about learning, but about language practice. Training and practice should complement each other, but replacing one with the other would be wrong. Training is a systematic process aimed at transferring certain knowledge or developing skills (as is the case with the CLP method). In turn, practice is an opportunity to test, develop and consolidate what you have acquired during distance learning. Agree, the tasks and opportunities for practice and learning are different.

Classes with teachers and via Skype are essentially no different from regular face-to-face classes; they are distinguished only by the form of delivery. In this case, the word “distance” in meaning is equal to the concept of “remoteness” - the person is not sitting in front of you, but is at a great distance. A good way for those who are conservative in matters of learning or, with an emphasis on independent study, still need live contact and regular teacher supervision. A significant advantage of such classes is that classes via Skype usually cost significantly less than face-to-face meetings with a teacher.

Learning German using distance learning programs has its advantages compared to classes with a teacher. Professionally made programs often contain much more features than any teacher. This is because a large number of people, and above all very experienced teachers, work to create such German distance learning programs at CLP. The fact is that any teacher can work face-to-face (or via Skype), at his own level and with his own methodological tools. And only the strongest teachers and methodologists can combine their knowledge and experience for distance learning German in such a way as to create a product that a person can use independently. When technical capabilities and software developments are added to this, the result of such work has enormous learning potential.

A distance form of learning a foreign language, like any other, has its pros and cons, and is not suitable for everyone. The main disadvantage of distance learning, especially with the help of distance learning programs and simulators for self-study, is that it requires the student to have a much higher degree of self-organization and discipline than classes with a teacher or courses. Questions for continuing education are also left to the student himself.
There are many students who should combine various approaches to learning German: for example, study independently using a distance learning program and at the same time take courses or communicate with a native speaker. Distance learning German

Generations of people born and studied in the USSR have become accustomed to treating correspondence (“back-to-back”, as it was also called) education with a certain degree of disdain. Now it is called remote. There is also on-line, as a type of remote.

Is it it?..

Correspondence learning includes assignments by mail (it really doesn’t matter which one: delivered in envelopes, or electronically), self-teaching textbooks, and in the case of the German language, also cassette tapes. By the way, this method of learning has proven effective for many!

Distance learning in the strict sense certainly includes the Internet, or more precisely, it is technically based on it.

The popularity of this distance form of education gained momentum in the Western world at the end of the 20th century. Now it is gaining momentum here too.

It should be noted that distance learning is very different. Depending on what technical means are used, the procedure for completing distance learning and the goals achieved differ. But in most cases, this option, in terms of content and meaning, really differs little from the correspondence “back-pack” option: some material is presented remotely, and skills, with rare exceptions, cannot be practiced in the educational mode.

The situation is fundamentally different with the distance programs of the Center for Language Psychology. The difference is that they are aimed at building skills! Personal distance programs CLP are ongoing training of the human auditory-speech system aimed at developing communication skills in German.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning German in general?

Probably the main advantage is convenience. You study where and when it is convenient, plus you do not waste time on the road, which is very important for large cities with heavy traffic.

Secondly, you can, at your own discretion, devote more or less time and attention to some German issues.

The third advantage is that distance learning, in particular the on-line form, provides technical capabilities that are more difficult and expensive to implement in face-to-face learning.

But perhaps the most interesting thing is the shortcomings.

The main disadvantage of a distance learning course is the flip side of the number one advantage - convenience. Comfort and freedom in learning require a greater degree of self-discipline than face-to-face learning. In full-time training, there are additional motivating factors in the form of money paid and the opinions of those around you: the teacher and fellow students, if you study in a group.

Therefore, some give it up halfway and begin to think that all distance learning in general is sheer nonsense. But the point is not in learning, but in attitude towards it. If they “invested” knowledge into you, but you yourself don’t really need it, it will still be of little use... Such semi-forced investment, and often the driving in of knowledge, can only have results in childhood. This trick usually doesn’t work with adults (we won’t take into account cases where it’s literally a matter of life and death). Decide for yourself: do you want it? Are you ready to devote time and attention and how much?

Any training should be treated not only as the development of certain skills or volume of information. Learning is first and foremost development. And in the case of distance learning, you should remember that it requires additional development of responsibility and self-discipline. For some, distance learning is a kind of challenge, a test of willpower. Some people actually get drawn into the process for a long time, quitting and resuming it several times. Many people, unexpectedly for themselves, quickly get results, and... also stop studying. True, then they realize that they want more, and start studying again. (By the way, developing a skill requires at least 3 months).
