Disciples of the Master Mikhail Pelopidovich Latry (1875, Odessa - 1941, Paris) - painter, graphic artist, ceramist. The exhibition presents 105 of his best works from the art gallery’s collection, testifying to the diversity of the artist’s creative interests. M. P. Latry is the grandson of I. K. Aivazovsky, he received his first impression of art from his grandfather’s paintings. He graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he studied in 1896-1902, with interruptions, in the landscape class of A. I. Kuindzhi. Studied in Munich at the art school of Holloshi and Ferry-Schmidt. Traveled through Greece, Italy, Turkey, Germany. Since 1902 he participated in the Spring exhibitions of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and the Vienna Secession, since 1912 - in exhibitions of the World of Art association in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kyiv. He was one of the founders of the New Society of Artists of St. Petersburg. In Crimea, he settled on the Baran-Eli estate near Old Crimea, where he equipped a workshop for painting and ceramics. In the early 1900s he was in charge of the Feodosia Art Gallery. In 1920 he went to Greece and worked at the Athens factory “Keramikos”. Participated in archaeological excavations on the islands of Delos, Crete, Thazos. Since 1924 he lived in Paris, was engaged in decorative and applied arts and painting. In 1935, his personal exhibition took place in Reims. The earliest work presented at the exhibition “Sunrise on the Sea” was written in imitation of I. K. Aivazovsky. An impressionistic approach is characteristic of a number of works that aptly capture the momentary state and mood of nature. The sketches “Lilacs in Bloom” and “Field of Irises” fascinate with the shimmering shades of purple. The awakening of nature is palpable in the “Thaw” landscape, conveying the state of a damp winter day. In 1906, the painting received a favorable review from critics: “Of Latry’s landscapes, the best is “The Thaw.” The dark gray damp tree trunks near the ditch are very good: they are already breathing in the spring, which is still far away.”

History of the Feodosia Gallery...My sincere desire is that the building of my art gallery in the city of Feodosia, with all the paintings, statues and other works of art located in this gallery, be the full property of the city of Feodosia, and in memory of me, Aivazovsky, I bequeath gallery to the city of Feodosia, my hometown. From the will of I.K. Aivazovsky In 1880, Aivazovsky added an art gallery to his workshop, the official opening of which was timed to coincide with the artist’s birthday and took place on July 29. This was the first peripheral art gallery in Russia, which enjoyed great fame even during the life of the marine painter. The collection of paintings in it was constantly changing, as the artist’s works were sent to exhibitions and never returned. Their place was taken by new ones, just written. Already at that time, the Aivazovsky Gallery was the center of artistic, musical and theatrical art in the city. These traditions live to this day. After the death of I.K. Aivazovsky, his art gallery becomes the property of the city. At the main facade of the artist’s house there is a bronze monument, on the pedestal of which there is a laconic inscription: ““Feodosia to Aivazovsky.”

Among the artist’s early works, an outstanding place belongs to the painting “The Ninth Wave,” which represents the pinnacle of the first, romantic period in his work. The painting was painted in 1850, when the artist was only 33 years old and in the prime of his creative powers.

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was born on July 17, 1817 in Feodosia in the family of an Armenian businessman, who later went bankrupt. First he studied at the gymnasium in Simferopol, then in 1833 he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where from 1833 to 1839 he studied with M.N. Vorobyov in the landscape class. Aivazovsky’s first painting, “Study of Air over the Sea,” which appeared at an academic exhibition in 1835, immediately received praise from critics. In 1837, the painter was awarded a large gold medal for three of his works with sea views. Soon Aivazovsky went to Crimea, receiving the task of painting a series of landscapes with Crimean cities. There he met Kornilov, Lazarev, Nakhimov. The artist’s Crimean works were also successfully presented at an exhibition at the Academy of Arts. In 1840, Aivazovsky was sent to Italy on instructions from the Academy. There he works a lot and fruitfully, studying classical art. Successful exhibitions of his works are held in Rome and other European cities. The Paris Council of Academies awards him a gold medal. Upon returning to Russia, Aivazovsky received the title of academician and was sent to the Main Naval Headquarters, where the artist was instructed to paint a number of Baltic views. Being a painter of the Main Naval Staff, Aivazovsky takes part in a number of military operations, creating paintings with battle scenes. One of the most famous works, written in 1848, was “The Battle of Chesme”. Aivazovsky portrays the sea as the basis of nature; in his depiction the artist manages to show all the vital beauty of the mighty element. One of Aivazovsky’s most famous paintings was his “The Ninth Wave,” painted in 1850. But Aivazovsky left a mark on history not only as a talented painter, but also as a philanthropist. Having accumulated considerable capital thanks to the popularity of his works, Aivazovsky generously engaged in charity work. With his money, the building of the archaeological museum in Feodosia was built, and a large number of works were carried out to improve the city. Many famous artists came out of his Feodosia workshop - Kuindzhi, Lagorio, Bogaevsky. Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky died on April 19, 1900.
